As you enter St. Stephen's, our ushers will extend you a friendly welcome and hand you a bulletin [order of service] and answer any questions. After you have found a pew to seat yourself, you will notice the attractive, peaceful atmosphere for prayer and/or meditation.
Our weekly Sunday worship is called Holy Eucharist, which is a service of scripture readings, sermon, prayers, and Holy Communion. There are two Sunday services, one at 8 am that we call a "spoken" service that is simple and quiet. Our 10 am service is called a "sung" service that includes a fine choir, organ, hymns, and often a handbell choir. The congregation takes part in all our worship through the Prayer Book that you will find in the pew along with the Hymnal. The service bulletin will help you find the pages in the Prayer Book. Our worship is ordered, God-centered,
contemplative, and prayerful; our community is caring, warm, studious and
active.
In general, we stand to sing,
to state our affirmation of faith, for corporate prayer and the reading of the Gospel. We sit for the sermon, Bible readings, and choir anthems. We kneel for confession and the Great Thanksgiving (the prayer at Holy Communion).
Our choir wears robes and our clergy wear vestments. We have Holy Communion using the "common cup". All baptized
Christians are welcome to receive the bread and wine.
